It’s hot out there isn’t it? During these hot temperatures, things can become parched. The sun’s rays seem to have the power to suck all moisture out of your yard, your face and even your mouth! Did you know that there is an actual condition called “dry mouth” that could be causing your dryness? You may be feeling parched beyond what a drink of water can refresh.
Dry mouth happens when the amount of salvia in your mouth becomes less and less. Your saliva is what is essential for maintaining your lubricated mouth. Saliva has proteins and enzymes in it that flush out bacteria, reduce bad breath, prevent infections and aid in digestion.
It is estimated that 1 in every 4 adults suffers from dry mouth. In these cases, dry mouth causes a build-up of plaque because your mouth is not moist enough. Food and bacteria stick to your teeth more easily.
There are some common signs that you have dry mouth.
- If you have ongoing bad breath, cracked lips, difficulty talking, swallowing or an altered sense of taste, you may have it.
- If you feel like you constantly need to sip water throughout the day, this may be a sign.
- If you feel self-conscious, anxious or stressed about your lack of moisture in your mouth, you may have dry mouth.
If you think you’re suffering from dry mouth, it’s a good idea to see a dental professional like those at Mansouri Family Dental to diagnose, treat, and help you create a day-to-day management process for your dry mouth.
