You may need bone grafting before dental implants if your jawbone is too thin, too soft, or has lost volume after tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma. The only way to know is through an implant consultation with imaging, often including cone beam 3D imaging. At Mansouri Family Dental Care & Associates in Marietta, we evaluate your jawbone, gum health, comfort needs, and restoration plan before recommending a dental implant bone graft.
Why Would a Dental Implant Need More Bone Support?
Dental implants rely on stable support from the jawbone. When you chew, that pressure travels through the implant and into the surrounding bone. If the bone is too weak or shallow, the implant may not have the foundation it needs.
A dental bone graft adds grafting material to an area where bone has been lost. Over time, your body can use that material as a framework for new bone growth. Bone loss can happen after a tooth has been missing for years, after gum disease, or after an injury.
How Do We Know If You Need Bone Grafting?
You usually can’t tell by looking at your smile. Bone loss happens under the gums, so the decision depends on a dental exam and imaging. Mansouri Family Dental Care & Associates has PlanMeca ProMax Cone Beam 3-D imaging in our East Cobb location, which can help us view the jaw in three dimensions when planning implant treatment.
During an implant consultation, we look at factors such as:
- How long the tooth has been missing
- The height, width, and density of the jawbone
- Gum health around the implant site
- Infection, trauma, or prior extractions
- The type of implant restoration being planned
Can Bone Grafting and Implant Placement Happen at the Same Time?
Sometimes, yes. Mayo Clinic notes that if the jawbone is too thin or too soft, bone grafting may be needed before implant surgery to create a more solid base for the implant. In some cases, only minor grafting is needed, and the graft can be placed during the same surgical visit. In other cases, the graft typically requires a healing period before the implant can be evaluated for placement.
For patients who feel anxious about oral surgery, sedation planning can also be part of the conversation. Dr. Michael Mansouri is licensed for conscious oral and IV sedation, so comfort and safety planning can be discussed before treatment begins.
What Bone Grafting Can and Can’t Do
Bone grafting can help rebuild support in an area with bone loss. It may make dental implants possible for patients who would not have enough bone support otherwise.
It does not guarantee that implants are right for every patient. Gum health, medical history, smoking, healing ability, and the final restoration still matter. Some patients may need periodontal care, extraction healing, or another treatment plan before implant placement makes sense.
